Unaussprechlichen Kulten (Chile) is an honest band which got well manifested on their demo "Esoteric Order Of Dagon", where they produced a piece of totally raw Death Metal . About all this new demon rising, we've asked questions Joseph Curwen (guit/voc):
1. Are You satisfied with the final result of "Esoteric Order Of Dagon"?
The truth is that one never gets fully content with the outcome, there always come out things that one would've liked to add or improve something, anyway I like it myself. The sound is very raw and aggressive, maybe a bit primitive, but the brutality is there and it stands for our concept of Death Metal. It is also important to state that it's a pure auto-production, we recorded it, mixed the material, made the copies for sale, that means the demo is not edited as such, we've managed all the promotion through friends and other people. Every sold copy went through our hands and/or the post office.
2. Tell us where does the name of the band come from?
At first we thought of using a Spanish name, we thought "Culto Innombrable" was perfect, after that we realized that the name was almost identical to the name of an occult German book that remained incomplete, called "Unaussprechlichen Kulten" which means "Worships without Name". This belongs to the Apocrypha of Cthulhu's myths, and it is really the most identical name to the subject matter of the letters.
3. Would You tell us a bit about the origins of the band?
Since 98 Goreskull and I (Curwen) started working on Death Metal material in the Suffocation's style, many projects and many persons passed through - and many rips off - finally we decided to work only the two, we did a couple of sound tests, until we got conformed with some and finally Esoteric came out...
4. What's Your opinion on the Chilean Death Metal scene of the early nineties and that of today?
The end of the eighties and the beginning of the nineties was the golden age of national metal, the "Agony" remembered in the Lautaro Hall or the shows at the Manuel Plaza were huge. Bands like Pentagram, Death Yell, Atomic Aggressor, Totten Korps, Massacre, Sadism, Bloody Cross, Darkness, In Aggressión, etc. enlarged even the international scene. Then Belial, Torturer, Undercfroft, Execrator, Pirosaint came etc. Now the bands don't seem to care anymore of agressivness and brutality, only to sound clean, to get commercial and to come out to a massive public, there is no point of comparison. Nevertheless there are good bands as Sheolggenna, Norphelida, Malectaus that are recovering the ancient feeling, and besides there are many bands underground making good material.
5. What was the purpose of the use of programmed drums on You demo?
We worked with many drummers, which never satisfied us or we could never get on with, besides we had the ideas very clear respecting the drums' tracks, the possibility was and we could not depend on a third person and allow that the material should rot, besides there was Mortician's precedent that is a band of worship for us, and the "Hate" of Sarcófago among others, we decided then to program the drum machine ourselves and not to lose the speed nor weight that we needed, this way the songs sound just as we wanted them.
6. Which of the eight tracks on the demo is you favorite?
Black Goat of the Woods ... it is very aggressive and besides obscure, a mixture that we always try to do and that costs very much, besides I like its structure and its breaks, there are no parts to take a rest there.
7. How do You manage it for the live shows with the drums?
Now we are working with Nicolás who is a friend of ours, a drummer, he liked our style and he started working on it to equal the machine, the live shows will always be with him, but on the upcoming recording we do not know if he will record the drums or we will program it. We will choose what better fits within the new tracks, which are much more intense and brutal.
8. How's been the response form the media, the public on Your live shows and the selling of the demo?
We have had contact with several zines, specially of our regions, some websites and some radio program. We have received good reception and good reviews of all, many people, all positive commentaries, we did a limited edition of 150 copies hand numbered, we've still have some if someone gets interested. Regarding live shows, we've had some but nothing special that would stand out.
9. Where do You get your inspirations apart from H. P. Lovecraft ?
The whole circle that is around H. P. Lovecraft is also indirectly tied to the occultism from remote times. From Eliphas Levi up to Crowley, the Esoteric and secret archetypes repeat themselves, from the annunaki and the maskim xul from the middle east up to dryads hidras, gorgonas and harpies in the west, even our Chilean mythology. All these topics always have influenced our lyrics.
10. Are You into any international promotion yet?
Apart from some websites and contacts with Zines, there has not been much promotion.
11. What was the graphic concept of the cover art?
It was drawn by a foreign friend called Paul, there's an ocultist appearing, with a ceremonial mask with the form of the head of Cthulhu going though some rituals outdoors in night of full moon, is perfect for our work.
12. What do You think of the following bands: Deicide, Death Living, Mortician, Broken Hope, Dismember and Vader?
Deicide: I liked them musically from the beginning, really I did not like their last 2 productions at all, there's been too much commercial shit around it and sometimes more than satanistic, there've been strange declarations from Benton.
Death Living: I respect their work, they're is honest, original and they are good musicians emphasized among other Chilean bands in their style, but that's not the kind of music I ussualy listen to.
Mortician: This is one of our bands of worship, all their material is so extreme.
Broken Hope: I follow them since the "Swamped in Gore", and in my opinion it's a band that got the recognition it deserved., I still remember the live show with Sodom, the production was a disgust, everything sounded badly.
Dismember: The classic one the Death Metal, their guitars sound and musically are unique and never to be mistaken.
Vader: For me "The Ultimate Incantation" is the best, a traditional Death Metal, without adornments or sticky parts, though I enjoy very much their later material, specially the guitars, the riffs are always great.
13. What do you guys do apart from the band?
I study and Goreskull is part of the dirty, labor world.
14. Have You got any new material yet? When are You going to released it?
We've been working on several songs, we've got four of those ready but we have not had the time to compose more and do the last touches, they are much faster and brutal, we're thinking on getting them ready by April 2025.
15. What South American bands would You recommend ?
Krisiun, Rebaelliun y Abhorrence!!!! Brazil Rules!!! Mortem and of course Sheolggenna, "The Dark Chambers" is incredible!
16. How would You describe the kind of music You release?
Brutal Death Metal!!!!, without melodies no harmonics searched carefully, not even trying to demonstrate instrumental virtuosity, which does not mean that it's monotonous or basic stuff, we strain in to realize a work with many changes, breaks and good riffs, without adornments or choirs cliches or sticky, but with good structures, slightly into Deeds's of Flesh or Deranged.
17. What's Your opinion on the nationalistic movements?
It does not really matter to us if people are grouped because of political or religious ideas, whether they are mad and they want to exterminate races, to govern the world or to commit suicide. I do not think anything of these people nor any other, that have nothing to do directly with us.
18. Do You think that Hate Eternal might ever become as important within the scene as Morbid Angel ?
I like very much Hate Eternal, in fact there's Doug Cerrito playing there, one of the guitarist I admire most that played with Suffocation, another of our lead favorites; but Morbid Angel seems to be the most important, influencial and representative Death Metal band and no other band could take them off the throne.
Finally, wishing You the best for the future and the band's growth, what would You like to say to end this interview...
Thanks a lot Blasfemo and the Diabolous.com crew for You support, and the interested in getting our demo can send us 1500 Chilean pesos or 3 U$D (postage included)...
Stay in Blasphemy!!!!!
