Cult of Daath was spawned on October of 1999 by Culggath Immortum(Guitar/bass/vox) and Wargoat Obscurum(battering rams/vox) to create utter darkness and war, to bring back the brutality and punishing evil... We've asked Wargoat a few questions:
1. How has the response of underground been on "The Triumphant Holocaust" demo and Your debut album release "The Grand Torturers of Hell"?
It has been positive for the most part, we made around 200 demos and got rid of them pretty quickly and the CD was pressed on 666 copies which War Hammer Records has just about sold out with, so we haven't had trouble spreading our plague around, we are influenced by the masters like Bathory, Darkthrone, Sodom but we are not trying to be clones like so many other bands strive to be, we are developing our own sound with each release.
2. I know that you have some material for a new ep & 7"... please tell me more about this?
Our new EP is entitled "Under The Cover of Darkness", it is Black Metal, a logical progression from the full length, actually these songs will be a pro tape release on War Hammer Records, it has 4 songs of cruel and barbaric Blace written/recorded a few months after the album was recorded, the material is over a year old, so I am eager to get this released so we can work on new material, expect a winter release. The 7 inch is a planned Cult of Daath/Nachtmystium split to be released on Sombre Records out of Germany, this has been planned for a while, I cannot say when it will be released, knowing Sombre most likely sooner than later, the 2 songs featured on this are also quite old, we haven't written anything really in over a year.
3. I think that you're a true extreme underground band... do you have some ambitions with the band?
We just create music that pleases us, we are not trying to reach a certain goal, obviously we aren't making money or will ever make money with Cult of Daath, I want to reach certain levels of extremity and darkness, we have hinted at things to come on our previous 2 releases and the upcoming Ep and 7 inch, but these are stepping stones, things to build on, to strive and become more original, bring in ideas that haven't been touched on before in Black Metal, create something that actually is true audial negativity, if it will ever happen time can only tell, but that is my ambition you can say.
4. I think that you're first album are very representative of your band influences... the new material sounds similar?
It is similar in most aspects, it is still barbaric Black Metal, but our new Ep has a few things we havent tried before, the song "Hammer of Hades" has some interesting tempos and unorthodox riffing, "Attack" has more mid-80's BM influence like early Sodom and the song "Under The Cover of Darkness" has some slower doomier parts that we haven't tried before which sound diseased, basically the same style as the album but taken to the next step.
5. I find "Sadomatic Rites" a great true black metal song... Do you think that you're music is some kind of a tribute to Beherit?
In a way yes I suppose, we wanted to cover song and we both worship the "Drawing Down The Moon" album, it is far superior than their debut in my eyes/ears, it is a dark, doomy salute to satan, it fit perfectly in our style.
6. Tell us about the lyrics of "Cult of Daath"... Where do you have your inspirations from?
Life, Death, The Occult, Black Magic, Ascension of Terror, Impenetrable Darkness, Cruel Gods, Downfall of Weak-minded Religions (christianity, judaism,...), Rise of Unholy Regime, Mysterious Unearthing. Basically life is my inspiration, I open all my senses and absorb my surroundings.
7. Many in the scene today only like bands with a big-budget/clean studio sound. What do you think about these people, who would say your sound is too raw and harsh?
I don't think our sound is indecipherable, I like things raw and but I still want the instruments heard, I hate listening to an album that is just total noise, I would like to hear what is going on, if I want to hear total noise I will listen to Brighter Death Now, :Slogun: or Whitehouse. I like Inquisition production n the last 2 albums, very full and warm, there wasn't even bass recorded and it still sounded amazing, the key I think is a powerful drum sound, once you have that you can build around that, add some raw chainsaw guitars and guttural bass, if we had the money to go to a studio we would, another thing is finding the right producer more than the right studio, he/she would need to share the same vision.
8. What do You think about such bands as Cradle of Filth & Dimmu Borgir which, in my opinion, use a false Black Metal image to sell more?
It is funny that people still complain about these bands, they have nothing to do with Black Metal, they are far beyond that doing there own thing, I personally think they are shit, these bands can do what they want, people should stop wasting energy complaining and moaning about how they are "untrue" and "false", center this energy on making music, or doing a strong printed zine, it is just boring hearing people whine about the same shit for years now, if you have such a problem go to Dani Filth's house and rape him.
9. What does "True Black Metal" mean to You and what do you think is the difference with "Trendy Black Metal"?
Hmm, we all hear these buzz words constantly, I see websites of bands sometimes were they do not even have one demo or played one show, but they are "true BM", we play Black Metal, not true, or pure, or trendy or gay or whatever, I do not need to use the "true" tag to describe us, to show that we are real, just listening to a band will tell you how serious they are.
10. If you could change one thing about the band, what would it be?
Well, no, songs or parts we do not like do not make it on a release, I am pleased with the way the demo, full length and the upcoming EP/7inch turned out, I have no regrets, our music is the driving factor, image is somewhat important but we do not put too much emphasis on that, let the music speak for itself.
11. Are you involved with any other projects?
I am currently involved in 2 other bands, namely Alioth and Deathgod Uggae, the debut Alioth demo entitled "Channeling Unclean Spirits" will be out very soon on Beneath The Swamp Prod., a small tape only label, the music of Alioth is best described as Occult Black Heavy Metal, it borrows a lot of influence from bands like early Rotting Christ, Varathron, Mortuary Drape and Masters Hammer. Deathgod Uggae is very grim and cold BM in the vein of Burzum or Sortsind, I am very excited with this band, hopefully a demo will be out in Winter. Beneath The Swamp Prod. will release tape only demos/albums in the Black, Death, Doom, Heavy Metal vein.
12. Do you sometimes ignore riffs just because they sound too trendy even if you like them?
No, if I don't like the riff I don't use it, I don't think about the "trendiness" or the "trueness" of the riff, if the riff is boring and uninspired I don't use it, I must say that is a lame question.
13. Which are the religious beliefs of the band? What do you belive in?
We are not followers of any religion, we are obsessed by the darkness and what is hidden beneath its ghostly arms.
14. How do you see the future of the band?
I see us releasing a few more albums and then see were we go from there, I do not want to become a band that releases too much material and then gets boring, when it is time to destroy Cult of Daath we will.
15. What are your favorite artists/albums of all time?
Well for just Heavy Metal my favorites are: Black Sabbath, Pentagram, Maiden, Mercyful Fate, Accept, Priest, Dio, St.Vitus, WASP,Candlemass, for Black and Death Metal: Varathron, Mortuary Drape, Burzum, early Incantation, early Vital Remains, Arckanum, Spetic Flesh, Rotting Christ, Beherit, Temnozor, Der Sturmer, Bathory, early Sodom, and plenty more, I listen to what I want, I dont care if others think it is "true" or not. I am not here to impress the "scene" by what I listen too.
16. How about the American black metal scene?
There are some good acts here, like Demoncy, Krieg, Nachtmystium, Absu, Infernal Hatred, there is no realy scene I suppose, I dont care about being a part of it anyway.
