IMPALED NAZARENE has been giving out to the world sick music and even sicker lyrics since the very beginning. Tormenting Jesus, vomiting, shitting, killing, ripping, fucking goats and whatever else a twisted mind only could think of... They've just come back once again... We interviewed Mika, vocalist and coofunder of the band:
1. Let's start from the very beginning. What made the Luttinen brothers to quit Mutilation and give birth to Impaled Nazarene, back in the 1990? Couldn't be music as of what I understand, You kept playing Mutilation songs for some time?
Mutilation fell apart because guitarist and bass player quit the band. We decided to form a new band with new members. There were lots of other Mutilations around at the same time so we decided to find a new band name, an original one. We kept a couple of Mutilation tracks and we still sometimes play f.ex. The Crucified live.
2. Your first full length recording Tol Cormpt Norz Norz Norz was a huge success in my opinion, opening You every door ever closed all around the world (personaly I listened to it first time in Chile in 1993!). You came out with an original, devastating LP - how do You recall those days? Even Osmose wouldn't be able to make a record so well known if it wasn't for the music & lyrics itself ! Was it something You were expecting at all?
We were not expecting anything at all. We just went in to the studio, got wasted and basically did all our crazy ideas in 5 days and thatīs it. It definitely stands out from other bands debut albums, nobody had done an album like that before. It wasnīt that much advertised when it came out. We actually spread lots of advance copies thru tape trading so it raised interest, to say the least.
3. Regarding Your corpse paint and image those years, which of course made an impact on the listeners... Whose idea was it? Did you all feel like it had to be there?
I cannot remember whose idea it was, it was just something that we thought we must have. Then in 1993, when the huge black metal explosion happened, we just decided to drop it for good.
4. Your lyrics right from the start were concentrated on three main topics: Satan, Perversions and War. Why would that be ? Where does your fascination with weapons come from? The rest is kind of obvious hehe...
Thatīs a good question but I cannot really tell you. I just find weapons interesting. I collect knives myself, donīt have many but basically I try to buy a knife from each tour we do. The most beautiful knives are from Russia.
5. Seriously, what makes You write such sick lyrics of fucking goats, corpses, pissing, eating shit and other similar stuff?
Life does. When you basically are a walking time bomb ready to explode, you better write about it rather than act out what you are thinking. I basically hate people and society and I make it clear with my lyrics.
6. Also right from the start Impaled Nazarene has been having line-up changes. What's the main reason for all those changes ? What is Your actual line-up and is it the line-up you were looking for all these years?
Some had alcohol problems, some left because of their girlfriends (the most pathetic reason to leave a band), some just lost interest on music. I have never been "looking for" perfect line-up. I can tell you that we have now kick-ass line-up: Raimoranta-lead guitar, Arnkil-bass, Kellokoski-drums, Anttila-guitar and me on vox.
7. Could you compare the first shows You played life years ago, and the shows You play today ? Have the fans watching You perform live changed in any way though the years?
We sucked totally when we were young. Basically we have improved as players and as showmen so we can kick ass nowdays. We have kinda mixed audiences nowdays, lots of hardcore/crust people came in when we did Latex Cult and Rapture. We have new fans and we have folks who have been there from the beginning. We have got nowdays more girls in Finland and that is only positive!
8. You've perform live in such countries as Greece, Mexico and many others... It is so damn sad how still the media can cancell your show (as it happened in Australia) because of what? What arguments do they use, when actually You play live all around the world and it's all fine with everybody else?
That Australian show was all ages show, it was supposed to happen at youth centre. Obviously it is very christian town and once they read the interview on a local newspaper, they complained to town hall and youth centre managers and voila, it got cancelled. It didnīt really matter, we got excellent publicity because of it and moreover we played another show in a different town. That is the only time we have had problems, thankfully.
9. While many groups appeared through the years using corpse paint as a main attraction for the fans, you left your make-ups aside still ripping through with every outcoming album. Last year though You performed live with the corpse paint on once again! What was that suppose to mean? Are You thinking of coming back to you very first years image or was it more of a - "lets give the fans a little surprise, they deserve" thing?
We played at Turku which is just rectum of Finland. We played there previously in 1997 and the show just sucked totally. So we said, letīs fucking put on corpse paint and raise hell and this is exactly what we did! The show was excellent this time but it wasnīt because of corpse paint.
10. How much time do You guys spend together on rehersals while not touring?
We kinda rehearse once a week. If we have shows coming up or a record to rehearse, then it is more.
11. Apart from all the work You put in Impaled Nazarene, do You hang out together, go to other bands' shows, go skiing, tramping, fishing, whatever?
I work at the same place as our bassist so we see each other kinda every fucking day. We donīt really hang out with each other, sometimes we go out and see bands. Everybody have their own friends whom we hang out more than with each other.
12. Not many bands can actually make a living out of the bands they play in. Are You happy enough with the sellings, having in mind how extreme is Your music? Is Osmose Producions making a good job all the way with the promotion of your releases?
Osmose could be better, of course. They are doing ok job I think. We donīt make living out of this, 2 of us work normal day jobs, 2 of us are studying and working at the same time and one of us is just lazy bum who takes money from the goverment and does nothing.
13. Did You have any censorship troubles with Your releases in any other country apart from the Suomi Finland Perkele trouble years back?
Nope.
14. Is Your music as much welcome by the fans in Europe as in the United States? Where do You get best response from? Any country in particular?
The best response is France, Finland and Japan! I think we sell practically nothing in USA.
15. Are there bands, that You would never go on tour? For what reason would that be?
We would never tour with christian bands. It would be just plain stupid thing to do.
16. Every band has its own way of writing their songs. Do You write Your material while on tour or each one writes at home and compare thoughts on rehearsals, or do You write your music only being all together on rehearsals or even while in the studio ? Could You tell us something about it?
This is very boring...we just write individually at home and then present, letīs say 99% ready material at rehearsals. Then we together decide shall we keep the song or part of it or shall we just delete it right away. We have tried to write on the road, this just doesnīt work out at all.
17. Are there any bands growing up on your lands, You can mention, that the fans should be aware of for the nearest future?
Finntroll is the only thing that is worth checking out.
18. Are You planning a tour promoting your Absence Of War Does Not Mean Peace, are You going to play in countries you have not been to yet?
Trust me, we have been doing the best we can to get a fucking South American tour and now it fell apart. This is just a fucking nightmare. We are on the X-mas festival bill here in Europe. 12 shows with 8 other bands, we play with Marduk, Six Feet Under, Immolation etc etc
19. Do You know whose chest is it on the cover of your latest AOWDNMP release?
Yeah, she is very good friend of ours and very lovely woman!
20. How much fun and how long did it take the making of the Hardboiled And Still Hellbound video?
It took one weekend and it was bloody great to hang out with this porn actress Rakel Liekki. She was really cool and it turned out that she is fan of our band. We were really, really drunk!
21. What was the streangest situation on Tour you can recall ?
One black (I mean totally black negro) guy came once, did a sieg heil salute (and was wearing a huge swatika on his neck) and wanted to talk about Adolf Hitler with us. We were like "have this dude looked into a mirror ever???". That was fucking weird, happened in Mexico City.
22. What are you nearest future and longer term plans ?
This week we are off to With Full Force festival. We have all in all 4 festival shows on July and after that we will start writing new material and we are going to record finally 7" ep Fuck Off And Die, it will be out in November or December. And on December we have that festival tour.
23. Tanks a lot for the interview! Would You like to say anything else to your fans out there?
Drink beer and be free!
