Here is an interview with a man from afar, named Adrian Bedkober. I asked him about his two projects: Stormweaver, which is a raw Black Metal one, and Hydra's Nidus, which is ...hard to say really, but very interesting for sure! Why does he perform by himself? What does he say about living in his country? All the answers You'll find below. Enjoy!
1. Hi Adrian! How are you? What's up in sunny Australia?
Hey! I'm not bad, thanks. Not much happening in my part of Australia, though.
2. You are probably aware that the people here have never heard about Stormweaver before. Please tell us a little bit about the origin of the band...
Stormweaver's origin is Adrian plus everything that has ever influenced me. I need to create shit and black metal was where I started.
3. Why did you decide to perform this kind of music ...and why all by yourself?
Originally I tried to get some friends to perform with me, but they weren't really enthusiastic about black metal so I didn't have much of a choice. I decided to perform black metal because I'm attracted to its aesthetics. My "Macabre Aesthetics" MCD is about that.
4. What was the purpose of changing the name from Soulblighter into Stormweaver? I personally think, the previous name was better...
Yeah, as far as black metal goes, Soulblighter probably is a better name. I guess I changed it to Stormweaver because I felt I was limited in some way by the connotations the old name carried. Stormweaver sounds a lot more Pagan and that was what I was into.
5. If You were to mention any of the favourite bands of Yours, what names it would be? Whose music has influenced You mostly?
The "Ice Palace" demo was very much a Burzum/Abyssic Hate thing. That's pretty obvious. "War Against Morals" was a bit more personal. People have said it sounds like Gorgoroth, but I never had them in mind when I made it. I wanted really mechanical treble shit and that's what I ended up with, so I was happy with it at the time. Black metal bands that I still listen to frequently are Xasthur, Darkthrone, Burzum, Abyssic Hate, Nokturnal Mortum, Judas Iscariot, Satyricon, Hemlock, Mutilation, Shining, but I'm into a lot of music, not just black/death metal. I'm sure that'll annoy some hardcore Internet black metal goons, but I really don't give a fuck.
6. Do You know any bands from Poland?
I know mostly Graveland, Behemoth, Thor's Hammer, and Gontyna Kry. Graveland and Gontyna Kry are especially good, although while I respect Gontyna Kry, my affection for Graveland is a little more lighthearted.
7. I suppose, Stormweaver is just Your studio project. I mean, You're playing guitar, singing, programming drums and producing material, which is very specific.
Yes. I can do anything I want. That's probably one reason why the title of my project keeps changing.
8. Are You into Black Metal only? Any stage performings just for fun and headbanging, in genres of like death or thrash in complete line-up?
I'm into a lot of different stuff. Some grind core blows me away. Gasp, for example, has been in my CD player a fair bit lately. I was in a death metal band a while ago, but I've never performed on stage (except with the school band) so I'm really just a poser with an 8 track.
9. Let's talk for a while about Your project Hydra's Nidus, which is very bizzare and it's not metal. What inspired You to create such a strange music?
A friend and I really got into Industrial stuff for a while. We started the Hydra's Nidus project but he didn't stick around, so I did it myself. I wanted to put an electronic twist on the genre and I'm quite proud of that CD. I don't know how original it is...
10. Do You like movie soundtracks? I think Hydra's Nidus sounds quite like a soundtrack from some psychodelic, indsutrial thriller movie.
Movie soundtracks can be cool. I've never seen a psychodelic industrial thriller movie, though, haha.
11. Sorry for that wacky expression then, ha ha.... Could You tell us, what kind of gear or software stuff did You use in HN?
I used an ESP guitar and bass, a keyboard and vocals through various distortions. I recorded this stuff through a digital 8-track and onto my computer. Then I warped and arranged stuff, created samples, etc. through a couple of computer programs: Acid Pro, Cubasis VST, Sound Forge, WaveLab Lite and FruityLoops.
12. How about bringing any touchy subjects up for discussion? What do You think about christian black metal? Did You know, that Australia is "famous" for it here in Europe?
Is it? Fuck that's really funny. Personally I don't give a shit. Organized religion isn't for me, but I create music for music's sake, despite how clichéd that sounds. If a Christian wants to create black metal, who cares? Everyone's a hypocrite. I think it's ironic that "evilists" can get so wound up about religious-orientated hate music. I mean isn't that their gag? In a way it could even be seen as a positive in that it fuels more hatred, and that's what black metal has always been about; for me anyway.
13. What is Your recipe for a living? Name the things, You hate the most within being a human.
I hate being unable to sufficiently express myself emotionally. I hate being suffocated by dogma. I hate being suffocated by idiots who think they are really cool because they aren't dogmatic and have no views on anything (ehem). I hate being sexually frustrated. I hate wasting my time. I hate people who waste my time. I hate feeling directionless. I hate people who don't hate or love anything. I hate having no money. I hate being sober. I hate being drunk, etc. As for my recipe for living, I'm still writing it. Currently it involves maintaining a good variety of consciousnesses.
14. So, what do You do for living?
I'm currently finishing year 12.
16. How it is, to be a metalhead in Your Contry? Do You have a lot of metal chicks there?
I wouldn't call myself a metalhead. There aren't many metal girls around where I live. If you know where to look there are small crowds... I don't really know what the average number for each country is so I can't say we have many or few.
17. How is the metal scene down there? Any Australian bands worth checking out?
The metal scene in Australia is actually a lot stronger than you might think. There are a lot of great bands to check out. To name only one or two: Myrddraal, Gospel of the Horns, Destroyer 666, Nazxul, Anwariad, Anarazel, Secratain, Carbon, Abyssic Hate (although I don't think he's Australian anymore), Abramelin.
18. What will be Your next call? Anything new form Stormweaver planned yet?
Well, I actually plan to combine Stormweaver with Hydra's Nidus to create slow/depressive "experimental ambient black metal". I'm not entirely sure how this will turn out. I'm mostly just fucking around and having fun with the concept at the moment. As I said, I'm doing my year 12, so I haven't had much time, but it's definitely in the works.
Okay, I hope to hear something from You in the future. Wish You best of luck! We've reached the end... and the end is Yours. Please, feel free giving Your regards to our visitors all over the world:
Hail! I hope everyone is either having an excellent time or a terrible time. Fuck being "not bad".
Thanks a lot for Your time! Keep up the spirit!
